Mosquitos
Mosquitos are difficult to be eradicated; however, diseases that are spread by mosquitos are ubiquitous and might lead to death.
Extermination of mosquitos requires experience and high-tech equipment, and must be carried out through detailed inspections, physical and chemical treatments by specialists.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease
Eradication of mosquitos:
Following ways could eradicate mosquitos effectively:
- Residual spraying of insecticides on surfaces whereon mosquitos might come across
- Thermal fogging or cold fogging (ULV treatment) to eradicate adult mosquitos
- Mixing larvicidal oil in stagnant water to kill the larvae of mosquitos.
Symptoms of mosquito-bites
Bites of mosquito cause itchiness and irritation to human skin and might cause symptoms, such as fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, cramp, lethargy and coma. In severe cases, death is possible.
Biting midges (Ceratopogonidae)
Biting midgets are small (1-4mm) insects that feed on human blood. The bites of biting midges could cause swellings that last for days or weeks. Scratching the bits worsens the recovering and might even cause infection.
Equipment and products, such as killer sprays and expellers can be used to expel biting midgets from their habitats.
Three types of diseases borne by mosquitos:
- Malaria:
Malaria is spread by anopheles, which are commonly seen in flower pots, empty cans, tires, plant leaf axils and hollows in trees.
- Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis) and Japanese encephalitis (JE)
The spread of elephantiasis and JE is caused by bites of culex, a type of mosquitos that is commonly found in paddies, cloudy water and sewers.JE can also be spread by aedes aegypti (a.k.a. yellow fever mosquito), which grow rapidly around stagnant water.
- Dengue fever
Dengue fever is mainly spread by aedes aegypti(a.k.a. yellow fever mosquito), which reproduce themselves around stagnant water.
Extermination of mosquitos
There are several ways to exterminate mosquitos:
- Use of mosquito lamps:
due to their habits of phototaxis and being nocturnal, mosquito lamps are used to attract mosquitos and facilitate the extermination of them. - Eradication of mosquito habitats:
this can be achieved by regular disposal of garbage and removal of stagnant water. - Installation of mosquito nets
nets should be installed in your ventilation system to block the invasion of mosquitos. - Do-it-yourself (DIY)
Placing pots of water mixed with washing powder outside closed windows and doors will efficiently kill mosquitos which try to lay eggs in them.
